FESTIVAL OF MUSIC

The Primary Schools Festival of Music, an official state icon, and custodian of an iconic South Australian tradition, engages our students in artistic excellence, cultural diversity and social inclusion through performance in Music and the Arts.

With its genesis in 1891 as the Thousand Voice Choir, the program has been an integral part of South Australian life and stands as an official State Icon.  The program reaches thousands of primary and secondary children annually and allows children opportunities to perform at prestigious venues, such as the Adelaide Festival Theatre and Entertainment Centre.

Fulham North Primary School has a long and proud tradition of involvement with the Festival of Music. The school funds affiliation with the Festival to access resources each year, including professional development for the choir’s school-based conductor, provision of an accompanist at rehearsals and the right to send choristers to the Festival.

The Fulham North Festival Choir is a year 5 and 6 elective choir, which rehearses once a week in school time.  It has a reputation for excellence, earning an A grading from the Festival’s assessment team almost every year.

Each year the school has students who achieve roles as Vocal Soloists, Assisting Artists, Hosts or members of the Orchestra or Dance/Drama Troupe.

In 2023, the Festival Choir consisted of 48 students from Years 5 and 6. Our largest choir in many years! We were lucky enough to perform on the premier performance at Concert 1. Our students were greatly supported by family, friends and teacher in the audience of 1200 people. Two of our talented choristers were selected to sing a solo.

The technology challenges of our changing world form the theme of our four-part song cycle for the 2023 Festival of Music, “World of Tomorrow”, by composer Paul Jarman. In this rapidly evolving modern world, it is hard to imagine that less than two hundred years ago there was no electricity, no running water or central heating and cooling. We lived without antibiotics and medicines. Cars, trucks, buses and planes were not yet invented. There were no telephones, let alone smart phones.
